Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police say they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Officers then located many other marked cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; authorities are presently not informed of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they stated.
City officials stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.
An important political figure stated the vandalism made him without words and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he stated on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
