From Acclaim to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.

Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric

Administration officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction process.

Questions Prompted by Redactions

While Trump's name and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater transparency.

“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a future Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.

A Faction of Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Release

However, some rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the administration.

The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.

But a few do not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative figures to go on the attack.

“It’s quite ironic how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”

Clinton Campaign Releases Statement

Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding those documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.

Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted

Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.

Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy folders of materials that contained no new data.
